Buchanan & Curwen’s History
Our company was founded in 1895 by two contractors, Harry Buchanan and Charles Curwen. Both apprentices to the Bristol-based electrical contractors Drake and Gorham, they decided to start their own business upon completion of their training, starting with the head office in Victoria Street. They later opened a branch in Leatherhead in 1907, primarily supplying generators for country houses.
As electric light became more popular, they opened an electrical showroom and several full retail branches in Beckenham, Dorking, and Horsley. These outlets ceased trading in the late 1960s and 1970s, following the introduction of discount superstores.
Today, our staff of 40 serves all domestic, commercial, and industrial clients. Working out of our offices in Bookham, near Leatherhead, we are proud to say that our name has been synonymous with high standards and reliability for more than 130 years.
